Gathering at Cork County Hall, car enthusiasts and their families will see up to 50 pre-war race and sports cars stage a re-enactment of the famous race.

The Cork Grand Prix ran for three consecutive years in the 1930s, the same decade incidentally in which Anthony Barry was awarded the prestigious Empire Cup for his world class skills at tea blending. Yet whilst Cork’s favourite purveyors of fine tea went on to become a staple in Irish culture, the Cork Grand Prix peaked in 1938. However, bringing back the memories of that era, members of The Munster Vintage Motor Cycle & Car Club will recreate the race in the vicinity of the Carrigrohane Straight, Cork, with several of the cars that participated in the actual race, re-living the experience 2013 style!

The Cork Grand Prix Circuit remains largely unchanged in layout from when it was used for racing in 1936, 1937 & 1938. So this Sunday 23rd June from 10.30am, the magic will be re-created, covering a three lap parade over the original Grand Prix Circuit while onlookers can enjoy the awesome spectacle – with a cup of Barry’s Classic Tea of course – in the concourse of County Hall. With a memorabilia display in the Hall, including pieces never seen heretofore, there are many interesting items on view. The route for the parade laps commences at 10.30am at County Hall via Victoria Cross, to Dennehy’s Cross, zipping out the Model Farm Road past the Motor Tax Office to Poulavone Roundabout, returning back by the Carrigrohane “Straight” Road to the County Hall. Exemplary marques joining in the fleet include vintage favourites MG, Austin, Bentley, Bugatti, Riley, Jagonda and Alvis. The event is free to attend but donations to Marymount Hospice are welcome on the day.

Alan Cavanagh, Event Manager for Munster Vintage Motor Cycle and Car Club said, ‘We are delighted to have the support of a Cork Classic, Barry’s Tea and other loyal supporters. This event is sure to appeal to those who have an innate appreciation of the classics, and as such we couldn’t ask for a better partner to help bring this prestigious event back to Cork.’

Barry’s Classic blend mobile unit will be on hand at Cork County Hall from 9am – 2pm, refreshing and revitalising drivers and onlookers alike. Also known as the connoisseur blend, Barry’s Classic is a very high quality tea that has a rich, strong and deliciously distinctive taste owing to its use of only the finest tea leaves, carefully selected from ten of the finest tea gardens in the world including Makomboki, Kenya.

You’ll remember the moment you first taste Barry’s Classic Blend.

www.barrystea.ie

© 2013.
